Hacienda Baru
Butterflies, Monkeys, Ants and Bats

Often sweltering hot and always humid,
it is nice to have the ocean nearby, after a day of trail hiking,
bird, butterfly and animal watching. Many species are here to see.

My favorite shot from
within Baru's covered
butterfly gardens. To get
a good butterfly picture,
prepare to get wet, as the
sprinklers within do
their job well.

White faced monkeys cross
overhead on the ocean
trail before us.

This white faced monkey
tore a branch off the tree,
dropping it 10 meters to
where I was trying to take
his picture. They are also
known to urinate on would

Leaf cutter ants are
everywhere, and
this highway has a
tunnel that goes right
under the trail.

A bat sleeps during the day,
holding on to the underside
of a leaf just above
the trail.

Here you see me taking the
picture of the above bat. You
can see how small the bat is by
following my camera into the
leaf you see above...
