Ajanta Caves
Part III

A mammoth reclining
Buddha in cave 26.
This is one of the finest
carvings in Ajanta caves,
and not so easy to get
a good picture of. It must
be 30' (10 m) long!

Another cave has a large
central carving, extending
high up towards the ceiling.

Another statue of Buddha,
inset into the facade near
the entrance to this cave.

These columns are more
than likely decorative, at
best. The weight they would
need to bear would be
inconceivable. However, if
they are decorative, they
are actually fairly boring
and simple ....

Here you see this cave
entrance only set back a
few feet from the cliff
walls in front of them, with
statues adorning all 3
walls which make up
the threshold facade.

Further progress past
cave 26 was disallowed by
the following sign. Being
good and respectful people,
we follow the rules even
when there is no security
officers with machine guns.

We then proceeded to
turn around and walk back
along the cliff side walkway
to the beginning of the
Ajanta caves.

The walkway that is carved
out in front of the caves I
believe is the original and dates back as old as the
caves themselves...

I turn back to take one
of my last photos of
yet another unique
place on the small planet.

Never one to pass by a
pretty flower, I spent a
few minutes trying to
capture a little color and
life verse the cold and solid
cave walls.

You can see a small stream
rolling and bubbling on by
in the background, down
in the valley.

These flowers were pretty
common here.

Worn away in the rock
floor, are several small
vacuous holes. I do not
know what did cause these.

After a time, we drove back
up to a high bluff face by
the road, which overlooked
the entire Ajanta valley.
