Castel Sant' Angelo
Carvings abound and the statue of St. Michael

During the plague of 590, Pope
(Saint) Gregory the Great, as he
crossed the bridge in front of
this mausoleum, saw at the
summit of the conical roof an
angel sheathing a flaming
sword, which he took as a sign
the epidemic would cease.

Verschaffelt in 1752) of the
original marble statue of St.
Michael by Raffaello da
Montelupo (which was placed
atop the castle in 1544).
