Lake Tahoe
August 1998

The name "Tahoe" came from the Washoe Indian Word "Da owa ga" Meaning "Big Water."
Lake Tahoe is 22 miles long, 12 miles wide and has 72 miles of shoreline. It's depth of 1645 feet
make it the third deepest lake in North America.
There are over 37 trillion gallons of water in Lake Tahoe. That's enough water to cover an area the size
of California to a depth of 14 inches. Because of it's tremendous depth and size, the lake never freezes
over. The lake was formed through the combination of faulting, volcanoes and glaciers.
