Mono Lake
Eastern California

The oldest lake on the continent, Mono Lake boasts an age of
over one million years. Saltier than the Great Salt Lake of Utah,
this natural wonder has undergone chemical reactions during its
history from underground mineral springs creating 'tufa towers'
of over 50' in places. Volcanic activity under the surface has created
large pumice boulders to form, creating yet more intriguing effects.
Diversion of tributary waters to the Los Angeles area severely
threatens this truly unique puddle of living history.

Honestly, it wasn't really much to
look at, though its importance
environmentally speaking is
unquestionable.

See the large Tufa towers in the
distance. Underground springs continue
to flow within them, growing them ever
taller.
