The Sé of Lisbon
(Sedes Episcopalis)

In 1150, three years after Afonso Henriques recaptured Lisbon from the Moors, he
built a cathedral for the first bishop of Lisbon, the English crusader Gilbert of Hastings,
on the site of the old mosque. Devastated by three earth tremors in the 14th century,
as well as the earthquake of 1755, and renovated through the centuries, today it
blends a variety of architectural types.
