Castelo
dos Mouros
"The Moorish Castle"
Standing
above the old town, like a sentinel, the ramparts of the 8th century
Moorish castle, conquered by Afonso Henriques in 1147, snake over
the top of the Serra.
On a fine day, there are breathtaking views from the castle walls
over the old town to
Palácio da Pena, on a neighboring peak, and far along the coast.
More wallls now than
castle, it was surrendered without a fight, as soon as it was learned
that Lisbon was sacked

Ariving at the outer walls on
the forested side, we enter
admidst a full attack!
Actually, park guards were
burning some underbrush.

From
along the walls, you can
see the walls wind off in all
directions, with Sintra
not far beyond (but at
significantly lower elevation).

Having
had a disastrously
horrible 16 hour flu/bug the
day before, this was the
best smile I could muster.
Revlon contract, here I come.
