The modern city of Bergama is not much more than
someplace you pass through on your way to Pergamum.
though it has a sizeable population. There was a parade on
the day we passed through; for a young 8 year old boy
who passed into manhood with his circumcision. Also of note
is the "Red Courtyard," the last pagan temple built here.

The parade is on, as our
young man is on his way
to be circumcised. Will he
be smiling later? Perhaps, for
this is an important custom.

of modern Turkey, has his
statue in nearly every city,
town and village. He seems
universally respected. His
military feats in preventing
the Allies from taking Istanbul
to resupplying the ailing Russia in
World War I are well known,
(see Gallipoli (Turkish Gelibolu))
and his works in founding the
modern, secular capital seat of
Turkey, in Ankara, is largely
credited for the stability
and differences between
the Muslim country of Turkey
and other more non-secular
Muslim nations.
