The Chapel of St. Catherine

Situated between the Dark
Church and the Shod Church,
St. Catherine has both a
narthex and naos in the form
of an open cross where all
the arms
are covered in
barrel vaults, a central
cupola and an apsis with a
templon.

Nine graves at the nartex

For 900 years these
reliefs have remained
vibrant and colorful, and
perhaps they should begin
limiting the flash
photography that unfortunately
runs rampant throughout the
open air museum churches.

However, the Dark Church
dates back to the end of the
11th century, and have
a number of beautiful, and
intricate relief paintings of
Jesus Christ and display
The Deisis, Annunciation, Journey
to Bethlehem, Birth, Worship of
the 3 Kings, Baptism, Resurrection
of Lazarus, Transformation of
Christ, Arrival in Jerusalem, Last
Supper, Betrayal, Crucifixion
and much more.

Heck, if I knew so much lied
within, I would likely have paid,
but they did but a very poor
job in the description. Not until
I purchased a book on the churches
did I learn of the paintings within
the Dark Church.
