Hagia Sophia
(Aya Sofya)

Considered the 8th wonder of the world by most historians, Hagia
Sophia (Church of the Holy Wisdom) was the world's largest church
from its completion in 537 until St. Peter's Basilica was built
in Rome 1000 years later.

The two famous architects of Asia Minor, Anthemius and Isidorus,
under the direction of the Roman Emporer Justinian, built this temple to
be bigger and more striking than the temple of Soloman in Jerusalem.
Christendom's most important church for 900 years, it was converted into
a mosque the day Istanbul was taken by Mehmet the Conquerer in 1453.
Becoming a museum in 1935, by order of Ataturk, founder of the modern
Turkish Republic, St. Sophia is a joy for all and must be seen in person!
